How to install and Configure WordPress SEO plugin by Yoast



In one of our recent posts we discussed about the advantages of using WordPress SEO plugin by Yoast. In this article we will see how to install and configure wordpress seo plugin.  Configuring this wordpress seo plugin is not as simple as other plugins as there are lot of options it takes time and you need to spend atleast 5 minutes to confire it perfectly.

Here I am giving the configuration I am using which seems good,  you can change as you wish. Lets start with installtion

How to install WordPress SEO plugin by Yoast

Installing wordpress SEO plugin is just like installing any other plugins. Go to WordPress Dashboard -> Plugins -> Add New -> Search -> Search for WordPress SEO and click install.

How to configure WordPress SEO plugin by Yoast

#1. Once installed properly.  You should able to see SEO options in the left side menu bar as shown in the below figure.

#2. If you are migrating from All in One SEO plugin, HeadSpace plugin then you need to import the SEO option from that plugin to WordPress SEO. For that

  1. Click on Import & Export
  2. Select the plugin you are using 
  3. Click Import 
All your SEO data from those plugins will be imported. Uninstall Old SEO plugin
#3. General Settings. For these click on Dashboard. select meta keywords if you are using meta keywords in your posts. Leave remaining as the Google also use date in search results so it can be enabled in snippet preview for posts. The advanced part of WordPress SEO meta is good for some posts or plugins,  so leave it unchecked.

#4. Webmaster tools. This is beautiful part of this plugin. You can verify your domain ownership without tweaking code or without uploading temporary file to your account.  Just Click on Google Webmaster Tools. It will redirect to Google webmaster tools and in the below box provide your verification code.

#5. XML Sitemaps. : Most important and useful option in this plugin. This option helps you to create xml sitemaps for even images.

#6. Titles : This option in this plugin helps you to over write the existing titles that comes default with wordpress. First of all you should enable this feature. Go to Yoast( in side bar ) -> Titles. Enable this option by checking force rewrite the titles.

Now you have to rewrite the titles for Home page, home page description, pages, posts, categories, and tags.

Similarly change the titles for  categories and tags as shown in the below figure.

Similarly for rewrite the titles for special pages.

#6. Indexation : Indexation in Yoast means telling the Google to index about the content of the pages. If you dont know about an option don’t put a check mark.

#7. Internal No Follow settings : No follow setting helps in content filter from being indexed in Google. There is no use of login pages and

Thats it, I agree it takes bit time to configure but WordPress SEO by Yoast definitely have some greater advantages in long run.
